Dyslexia is more than a phonological disability

چکیده
This article reports an extended ‘case series’ of studies comparing performance of three age groups of dyslexic and matched control children on primitive skills. The dyslexic children showed deficits in most of the skills, with fundamental deficits (worse performance than reading age controls) on phonological skill, naming speed, bead threading, and on some balance tasks. Furthermore, there was no evidence of sub-types of dyslexia, with all dyslexic children showing deficits in at least two skill modalities. The results, which have considerable theoretical and applied significance, demonstrate that the difficulties of dyslexic children are not limited to phonological skills. Phonological skills, visual attention span, and visual stress in developmental dyslexia.
In this study, we concurrently investigated 3 possible causes of dyslexia-a phonological deficit, visual stress, and a reduced visual attention span-in a large population of 164 dyslexic and 118 control French children, aged between 8 and 13 years old. We found that most dyslexic children showed a phonological deficit, either in terms of response accuracy (92.1% of the sample), speed (84.8%), o...

Background: Comparison of verbal fluency is an important part of neuropsychology assessment that contributes to declaration and illumination of dyslexia. This research aims to compare the phonemic and semantic verbal fluency in dyslexic children. Methods: This study takes cause-comparison study approach. Using purposive sampling, 30 dyslexic children who visited a learning disability centers ...

It is ironic that our recent report on the neural correlates of Chinese dyslexia (Siok, Perfetti, Jin, & Tan, 2004) raises a concern by Ziegler (2006) that this report could undermine an agreed-upon conclusion favoring a phonological deficit as the cause of reading disability. Our past research over 20 years in English (Perfetti, 1985) and Chinese (Perfetti, Liu, & Tan, 2005; Pollatsek, Tan, & ...

Problem statement: Developmental Dyslexia (DD) or Reading Disability (RD) that was part of a larger heterogeneous group of learning disorders and characterized by unexpected problems in academic performance, despite average intelligence. Approach: Current opinions on the biological basis of dyslexia pointed to problems with phonological processing deficits with resulting poor phonemic awareness...
